Ophthalmoplegia is an eye disorder in which one or more of the six muscles of the eye got affected and thus causing it to weakness of the eye muscles which ultimately leads to eye paralysis. This disorder can be congenital or also can be developed later in life. Few common causes include brain tumor, migraine, thyroid disease, stroke, infection in the eye and any kind of brain injuries.

In this condition, nerve fibers that coordinate both eyes in horizontal movements looking from side to side- are damaged. A retrospective study of all diabetic patients with ophthalmoplegia who were seen in the Metabolic Division at “S. Biagio” Hospital, Marsala, was conducted over the 10 year period from 1998 to 2007.

A detailed history and blood laboratory reports  were obtained for each patient.

During the survey a total of 6,765 diabetic subjects were hospitalised and ophthalmoplegia was identified in 27 patients (0.40%).

Isolated nerve palsies accounted for the majority of patients (59.3%), with nerve palsies (29.6%) occurring more frequently than multiple palsies (11.1%).
